Description
Toffee Crack, also known as Saltine Toffee Bark, is an incredibly easy and addictive treat that combines salty crackers with sweet, buttery toffee and a rich chocolate topping. It’s perfect for holiday baking, parties, or just a simple sweet craving.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sleeve (about 35–40) saltine crackers
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 (12-ounce) bag chocolate chips (milk, semi-sweet, or dark)
- Optional: Flaky sea salt for sprinkling
Instructions
- Preheat Oven & Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet (13×18 inches) with parchment paper or foil, extending up the sides. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, close together, covering the entire surface.
- Make the Toffee: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the brown sugar and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Once boiling, continue to boil for 3 minutes without stirring. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers. Use an offset spatula to spread it gently if needed, ensuring all crackers are coated.
- B Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbly and slightly darker around the edges.
- Add Chocolate: Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let sit for 5 minutes to allow the chocolate to melt.
- Spread Chocolate & Chill: After 5 minutes, use an offset spatula to gently spread the melted chocolate over the toffee layer. If desired, sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
- Cool & Break: Transfer the baking sheet to the refrigerator and chill for at least 2 hours, or until completely firm. Once firm, break the Toffee Crack into irregular pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the refrigerator for longer.
Notes
- Saltine Substitutes: While saltines are traditional, you can experiment with other crackers like Ritz crackers for a richer, buttery flavor, or even pretzel snaps for extra crunch.
- Chocolate Varieties: Feel free to use your favorite type of chocolate chips – milk, semi-sweet, dark, or even white chocolate. A combination can be delicious!
- Add-ins: Before the chocolate sets, consider sprinkling with chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts, almonds), crushed peppermints for a holiday twist, or even colorful sprinkles.
- Storage: Toffee Crack can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. It also freezes well for up to a month.
