Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
- In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and red food coloring.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Stir in the white vinegar.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- To make the cream cheese frosting: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and cream cheese together until smooth.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Once the cakes are completely cool, frost the top of one cake layer, then place the second cake layer on top. Frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
- Decorate as desired and serve.
Notes
- For best results, make sure your buttermilk, eggs, butter, and cream cheese are at room temperature.
- Do not overmix the batter, as this can lead to a tough cake.
- You can adjust the amount of red food coloring to achieve your desired shade of red.
