These Orange Cardamom Shortbread Stars are a delightful twist on a classic shortbread cookie. - ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon orange zest (from about 1 medium orange)
- ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the orange zest, ground cardamom, and salt to the butter mixture and mix until just combined.
- Gradually add the all-purpose flour, mixing on low speed until a dough forms. Be careful not to overmix.
- Divide the dough in half, flatten each half into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or until firm.
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about ¼-inch thickness.
- Using a star-shaped cookie cutter (or any shape you prefer), cut out cookies and carefully transfer them to the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Repeat with the remaining dough.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg along with the cardamom.
- These cookies can be decorated with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and orange juice, or dusted with powdered sugar once cooled.
- Store leftover shortbread stars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
