Description

These Orange Cardamom Shortbread Stars are a delightful twist on a classic shortbread cookie. Infused with the bright zest of orange and the warm, aromatic spice of cardamom, these buttery cookies are perfect for holidays or any time you want a special treat. Their crisp texture and golden color make them as beautiful as they are delicious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest (from about 1 medium orange)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the orange zest, ground cardamom, and salt to the butter mixture and mix until just combined.
  3. Gradually add the all-purpose flour, mixing on low speed until a dough forms. Be careful not to overmix.
  4. Divide the dough in half, flatten each half into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or until firm.
  5. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about ¼-inch thickness.
  7. Using a star-shaped cookie cutter (or any shape you prefer), cut out cookies and carefully transfer them to the prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Repeat with the remaining dough.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg along with the cardamom.
  • These cookies can be decorated with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and orange juice, or dusted with powdered sugar once cooled.
  • Store leftover shortbread stars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
  • Dough can be made ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 3 days, or frozen for up to 1 month. Thaw in the refrigerator before rolling.
