Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (80/20 or 85/15 recommended)
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion (for patties)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil
- 1 large yellow onion, sliced
- 8 oz cremini mushrooms, sliced
- 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
- 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of chicken soup
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (for gravy)
- 2 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and quartered
- 1 lb fresh or frozen green beans, trimmed
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a large baking dish (9×13 inch or similar).
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup finely chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Mix gently until just combined (do not overmix).
- Form the mixture into 6-8 oval-shaped patties, about 3/4 inch thick.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the hamburger steaks for 2-3 minutes per side until nicely browned. They don’t need to be cooked through at this point. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced large onion and mushrooms. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened and lightly browned.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, beef broth, dried thyme, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper until smooth.
- Arrange the quartered potatoes and green beans in the prepared baking dish. Place the seared hamburger steaks on top of the vegetables.
- Pour the mushroom and onion mixture over the steaks and vegetables, then pour the soup mixture evenly over everything.
- Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.
- Bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the hamburger steaks are cooked through.
- Let the bake rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can add a splash of red wine or a dash of browning sauce to the gravy mixture.
- If you prefer, you can use frozen chopped onions and mushrooms to save on prep time.
- Feel free to substitute other vegetables like carrots or corn, adjusting cooking times as needed.
- Leftovers store well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
