Description

This French Onion Dip with Caramelized Onions (From Scratch) is a savory bliss! It’s a creamy, rich, and satisfying appetizer spread that’s surprisingly easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
  • 1 cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a large, heavy-bottomed skillet or Dutch oven, melt the butter and olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onions, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Stir to coat the onions.
  2. Slow Cook: Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, for 45-60 minutes, or until they are deeply golden brown, very soft, and sweet. If the onions start to stick, add a tablespoon or two of water to deglaze the pan. Be patient; this slow cooking is key to developing their rich flavor. Once caramelized, remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  3. Prepare the Dip Base: In a medium bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir until well combined and smooth.
  4. Combine: Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the sour cream mixture. Stir gently until evenly distributed.
  5. Chill: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dip for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  6. Serve: Before serving, taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed. Garnish with fresh chopped chives, if desired. Serve with potato chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • Patience is Key: Don’t rush the caramelization process. Slow and low heat is essential for developing the deep, sweet flavor of the onions.
  • Make Ahead: This dip tastes even better the next day, so it’s perfect for making ahead of time for parties.
  • Storage: Store leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
  • Customization: For a tangier dip, you can add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. For a touch of heat, a pinch of cayenne pepper can be added.
